Wordbuster- Raced wide throughout. Commenced to give ground from leaving the 450 metres. Compounded in the home straight. When questioned, jockey Fayd’herbe explained that this gelding usually comes from off the pace. From its wide draw, he endeavoured to jump out well and secure a position in front of Subtropical and High Key, who he expected to be the backmarkers in the race. After jumping well, he asked his mount for an effort, and leaving the 1300 metres, found himself racing in a wide position, but in front of Subtropical and High Key. He also said that from leaving the 1200 metres, seeing that Man From Seattle was taken inwards towards the rail, he expected to secure the position one-off the rail on its outside. However, High Key, which was traveling better than him at that stage, improved on its inside, forcing him to ask his mount for an effort in order to secure the position in front of High Key, and when asked for an effort, Wordbuster failed to respond, resulting in him being caught wide throughout.

Subtropical- Jumped awkwardly and shifted ground outwards, crowding Man From Seattle onto High Key. Approaching the 250 metres, for some distance, was held up from behind Man From Seattle.

High Key- Slow to begin.

Result: 1st: Sand Path, 2nd: Camp David, 3rd: High Key, 4th: Subtropical

Stewards' Report

On arrival at the start, jockey Sola expressed concerns with the action of Superstitious. It was examined by the Official Veterinary Surgeon, and found to be lame near-fore. Acting on veterinary advice, the Stewards ordered its withdrawal at 14h35. All bets on Superstitious were ordered to be refunded, and 5 cents per rupee was deducted on fixed-odds winning bets; the average odds of Superstitious being 19-1.

Dark Force- Raced wide from the 600 metres. When questioned with regards to its poor showing, jockey Orffer explained that this gelding had pleased in the lead up to the race, and expected a good showing in today’s race. Although there was pace in the race, from its 4th draw, he expected to be able to lead. However, after jumping well, Dark Force did not show the expected pace in the early stages and seeing that Great Stohvanen and Ninotto were insisting on his inside, he elected to bring this gelding back and settle behind the pace. However, from approaching the 800 metres, his mount commenced to hang out badly and did so throughout the race, and despite his attempt to get it to the inside rail, he could not manage. He further added that when asked for an effort leaving the 400 metres, Dark Force failed to quicken and was hanging out, being disappointing.

GENERAL

On inquiry into an incident leaving the 1300 metres, it was established that on jumping, Big Mistake shifted ground inwards, crowding Emerald Band, which had jumped only fairly, onto Over The Odds, with both Over The Odds and Emerald Band racing tight, and Over The Odds becoming unbalanced. Over The Odds was urged forward to keep its position, and shifted out slightly, carrying Emerald Band outwards onto Big Mistake. After having been urged forward, Over The Odds failed to negotiate the turn properly, and shifted ground outwards, carrying Emerald Band and Big Mistake outwards onto Henry Tudor, which was keeping its line. Henry Tudor was then bumped on its hindquarters by Big Mistake, with Henry Tudor becoming unbalanced, and being turned sideways, shifting in, and crowding Big Mistake, with the latter running out of galloping room and having to be checked. In this incident, Emerald Band was also cramped for room and had to be eased. The Stewards being of the opinion that no blame could be apportioned to any one rider, decided not to proceed further, other than to report it as a racing incident.

Result: 1st: Toro Bravo, 2nd: Blackburn Roc, 3rd: Syds Liason 4th: Emerald Band
