RV opens inquiry into embarrassing claim bungle

Racing Victoria stewards will open an inquiry into a bungle that allowed an apprentice to claim her weight allowance in a non-claiming race at Ballart on Friday.

Jackie Beriman claimed 1.5kg off Mybenz's weight in the Hygain Fillies and Mares' Rating 62 Handicap (1200m) despite the advertised conditions of the race clearly stating apprentices were not entitled to an allowance.

Stewards and the clerk of the scales failed to pick up the error when Beriman weighed out for the race.

Mybenz went on to win the event by a half-length over Kochamma before the blunder again slipped through the stewards and clerk of the scales after the race with the stipes declaring correct weight.

Chief steward terry Bailey told Fairfax newspapers he was "obviously not happy" with the embarrassing error, adding Mybenz would almost certainly be disqualified from the event for not carrying her full handicap.

Bailey said the jockey was required to notify the stewards on duty at the scales when they were entitled to claim an allowance but Beriman had erred at Ballarat.

Bailey said the apprentice could face a reprimand for her role in the debacle.

"There are a number of checks and balances in place to prevent this sort of thing from happening and obviously it is very rare, but the buck ultimately stops with the jockey," Bailey said. "She should not have got on those scales and said she could claim 1.5kg."

The inquiry will prove no comfort to punters, especially those on the second horse, who lost their money on the event.
