Cherry On The Top (Juglall) shows her class in Fillies Guineas

Cherry On The Top (SAF) defied a poor draw to post a brilliant victory in the Gr 2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas over 1600m at Turffontein on Saturday. Do You Remember (SAF) ran on well for second ahead of King's Temptress (SAF) and  Espumanti (GB).

Well handled by apprentice Nooresh Juglall, Cherry On The Top got into a position just off the leading quartet as Fire Wheel went out to lead from Wood Nymph, with odds-on favourite Espumanti disputing third place alongside Secret Obsession. Do You Remember sat in midfield with King's Temptress also dropped out in the early stages.

Fire Wheel was unable to kick on as she had done in her previous start and soon came under pressure in the straight. Espumanti moved up threateningly as Do You Remember started to make some progress up the inside but the real action was about to unfold wider out as Cherry On The Top started to find her stride. It was clear a long way out that she was travelling better than any of her rivals and she burst clear in the final furlong to make it a one-horse race.

The winner certainly looks to be the real deal, as she had also had to overcome a poor draw when posting an equally emphatic victory in the Fillies Mile over this course and distance in December. The SA Fillies Classic should be next up and judging by the way she won here, she will have no problem whatsoever with the extra furlong there. Trainer Ormond Ferraris (pictured) has good reason to be pleased with this latest victory and he proved yet again that, despite not having a massive string, he remains one of the best horsemen in the country.

Do You Remember was facing her stiffest task to date and emerged with plenty of credit. She looks the type who needs more ground and it would be no surprise to see her in contention for the SA Oaks in two months' time.

King's Temptress came from well back and seemed to hit a flat spot halfway down the straight. She eventually made some late progress without ever threatening the winner. The form book was effectively borne out here, as King's Temptress had easily beaten Cherry On The Top at their last meeting, in the Three Troikas Stakes, but was now 5.5kg worse off.

Espumanti appeared to have every chance and was backed as if she could not be beaten. This was her first real test and she seemed to run of steam late but it's worth remembering that she is, on average, roughly six months younger than her local rivals and is still playing catch-up on the age front. She looks far too smart a prospect to be written off on the basis of a single defeat.
