Summerhill Stud shows the way (part 2 of 2). Anton Shepherd’s Beaumont Stud bred the Equus Horse Of The Year and Champion three-year-old colt, the three-year-old Joey Ramsden-trained Variety Club (Var), who won two Grade 1’s, two Grade 2’s, two Grade 3’s and was runner up in two Grade 1’s.

Chris van Niekerk bred and owned Pomodoro, the three-year-old Jet Master colt, who won the country’s premier race the Vodacom Durban July and also dead-heated in the Grade 1 SA Derby. Pomodoro’s dam Golden Apple was named Equus Champion Broodmare.

The BBP Syndicate (nominee Garth Miller) bred the Vaughan Marshall-trained Equus Champion two-year-old filly All Is Secret (Captain Al), who won two Grade 1s and was runner up in a Grade 2.

St. John Gray of Graystone Stud bred, owned and trained the five-year-old mare, Dancewiththedevil, who added two more Grade 1s to her three from the previous season.

Willem Engelbrecht Jnr bred the four-year-old Jet Master filly Ebony Flyer, who won another two Grade 1s.

Avontuur Thoroughbred Farms bred the Dennis Drier-trained five-year-old Var mare Val De Ra, who added a Grade 1 and a Grade 2 her CV, and they also produced the Grade 2 winner, the Mike Bass-trained Chesalon (Fort Wood).

Daytona Stud bred the four-year-old Mike Bass-trained Western Winter colt What A Winter, who was named Equus Sprinter Of The Year and Equus Champion Older Male, having won a Grade 1 and a Grade 2 as well as finishing third in a Grade 1.

Lammerskraal Stud bred the three-year-old Grade 1 winning De Kock-trained Jet Master filly Viva Maria and also bred the four-year-old Brett Crawford-trained gelding Polar Bound, who won a Grade 2.

Gavin Schafer bred the Gavin van Zyl-trained three-year-old Grade 1 winning colt Slumdogmillionaire. Riverton Stud bred the Dennis Drier-trained two-year-old Grade 1 winning colt Potent Power (National Emblem).

Jaco and Carolyn Erasmus bred the Corné Spies-trained two-year-old Grade 1 winning colt War Horse (Victory Moon). D Cohen And Sons bred the Alyson Wright-trained four-year-old gelding Code Rock (Doowaley), who won Zimbabwe’s biggest race, the Grade 1 Castle Tankard.

The Mike de Kock-trained Equus Champion Older Filly Igugu (Galileo), who won the Grade 1 J&B Met as well as a Grade 2, the Justin Snaith-trained Grade 1 Queen’s Plate winning three-year-old colt Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready), and the Charles Laird-trained Grade 1 winning three-year-old colt Delago Deluxe were all bred in Australia.

Argentine-breds captured two Grade 1s via the Dennis Drier-trained three-year-old filly Bambina Stripes (Equal Stripes) and the Dean Kannemeyer-trained Equus Champion Stayer, the six-year-old gelding In Writing (Editor’s Note).

New Zealand
The De Kock-trained five-year-old mare Europa Point (Rock Of Gibraltar), who won two Grade 1s, was bred in Ireland and De Kock’s unbeaten two-year-old Grade 1 winning filly Rumya (Red Ransom) was bred in New Zealand.

Summerhill Stud bred two individual Grade 2 winners, the Tyrone Zackey-trained Smanjemanje and the Gary Alexander-trained Pierre Jourdan. Wilgebosdrift Stud bred two Grade 2 winners trained by De Kock, Ilha Bela and Kavanagh.

The Herman Brown and Frank Robinson-trained dual Grade 2 winner Antious was bred in Argentina.

Three De Kock-trained Grade 2 winners, Golden Chateau, Tajmeel and Amanee, were all bred in Australia, while his five-year-old Grade 2 winning mare Gorongosa, was bred in Ireland and his four-year-old Grade 2 winning filly Welwitschia was bred in Great Britain.

The Ivan Moore-trained Grade 2 winner Ottimo and the Sean Tarry-trained Happy Archer, who added a Grade 2 to her CV, were both bred in Australia.

Others who bred Grade 2 winners were Bush Hill Stud, Midlands Equine Enterprises, Normandy Stud, Pat And Henry Devine, Pee Bee Stud, Oldlands Stud, Advocate Altus Joubert, Waterford Stud, Mr and Mrs L Christmas, Victory Moon Breeding Syndicate (Nominee DGA Mar), Trevor Armitage, Zimbabwe’s Sarahdene Stud, Cheveley Stud and Dr Ian Heyns.
