Rumya too good in Golden Slipper

Rumya (NZ) showed she is a filly with a future as she posted an impressive victory in the Gr 1 Golden Slipper over 1400m at Greyville on Saturday. Straight Set (SAF) ran her usual honest race in second, ahead of Schiffer (SAF) and KIng's Termptress (SAF).

Confidently handled by Anthony Delpech, Rumya sat in midfield, hard against the inside rail, as Schiffer went out to set a decent gallop. Badly-drawn favourite All Is Secret came across to race in second ahead of Ilha Rock and Straight Set with King's Temptress next best.

Schiffer kept going gamely in the straight as Straight Set moved up to challenge. King's Temptress also moved into contention as Rumya started to unwind to the inside.

Straight Set had gotten the better of Schiffer and looked well set a furlong out, but Rumya was really starting to motor to her right. It was clear that the Mike de Kock-trained runner was going to mow them all down and she swept by late to win going away.

Rumya was only having her second run and remains unbeaten, with the prospect of more graded prizes to come. She showed tremendous acceleration for such a young and inexperienced filly and she looks to be something special.

Straight Set continued her trend of never running a bad race. She once again found one too good for her on the day but she has been running consistently well in defeat and it was no disgrace to go down to a winner of such clear quality.

Schiffer ran a cracker in third. She had won on debit over 1000m and was now taking a signfiicant step up in class and distance. She kept going really well after her early exertions and more will be heard from her.

King's Temptress will always be remembered for her 150/1 victory on debut in the SA Fillies Nursery but she had then flopped in the Allan Robertson where she was never sighted. This was more like it and one suspects she will be even better when she reverts to a more galloping track.
