Communiqué des commissaires (en version originale)

Bolting Cat and Piquet jumped awkwardly and rolled out with Darcy’s Arcy becoming inconvenienced on the outside of Bolting Cat. Bongo Beat jumped awkwardly and was slow out. Shortly after the start Darcy’s Arcy rolled out, Juan Belmonte rolled in, resulting in Pageantry becoming cramped for room in between these two horses for a short distance. Bourne Supreme raced wide in the early and middle stages. Leaving the 1200 metres Bongo Beat started to over-race and when taken back, rolled out and became awkward when close to the heels of Bourne Supreme. Bolting Cat over-raced from leaving the 1200 metres. Approaching the 1000 metres National Manner was taken out from behind Darcy’s Arcy and in doing so carried Bongo Beat wider on the track, Bongo Beat then raced wide from then onwards. Approaching the 400 metres What A Hit was taken out from behind Juan Belmonte to close off the race and in doing so carried Pageantry wider on the track. Leaving the 200 metres Piquet was taken in from behind Bolting Cat in order to obtain clear running. Juan Belmonte, which was endeavouring to improve on the inside of Piquet, was taken in and brushed the running rails. What A Hit, which was following Juan Belmonte, was taken in and cramped Darcy’s Arcy which was improving on its inside, resulting in Darcy’s Arcy having to be eased and brushing the running rail. At an inquiry into this incident, jockey Geroudis pleaded guilty to a charge under MTC Rule 160 A (e) for careless riding and was subsequently fined Rs.25,000. Zorba’s Dance had a tendency to lay out in the home straight. Juan Belmonte lost its near fore shoe in running. The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that What A Hit suffered a bleeding attack. An inquiry was held into the handling of Piquet. Evidence was taken from acting Stable Manager R. Pertaub and apprentice Bheekary. Mr. Pertaub explained that this horse had pleased in the lead up to the race and as it was jumping from a good draw and carrying a low weight, a good run was expected from this gelding, as such it was supported by stable connections. After discussing the race with apprentice Bheekary it was agreed that apprentice Bheekary would jump and endeavour to secure the position behind the leader and wait until the home straight to produce his best effort. Apprentice Bheekary confirmed these instructions and explained that Piquet jumped very well and managed to secure a position following the leader Bolting Cat leaving the 1200 metres. He added that near the 1000 metres Bolting Cat started over-racing and opened up a gap. He then elected to let his mount run in its pace rather than to follow Bolting Cat as he was of the opinion that Bolting Cat was going too fast in the back straight and leaving the 700 metres when Zorba’s Dance improved on its outside, Piquet started to over-race and became somewhat inconvenienced approaching the 450 metres when close to the heels of Bolting Cat. He added that rounding the home turn he elected to go for an inside run as his trainer usually prefers him to come on the inside of horses rather than on the outside and as Piquet has a short burst of acceleration, he only took his mount to the inside of Bolting Cat when it started making ground on the latter, from then on Piquet quickened nicely but plodded over the final 50 metres, finishing 2nd. When questioned, apprentice Bheekary explained that at the start he did not ask Piquet for an effort as this gelding has a tendency to over-race in its races together with the fact that it had jumped very well and that he made Bolting Cat work up to the 1200 metres before relinquishing the lead. He also explained that in his opinion had he elected to come to the inside of Bolting Cat earlier in the home straight, it would not have changed the result as his mount was not making ground on Bolting Cat over the last 50 metres. Mr. Pertaub stated that, in his opinion, if Piquet was good enough it would have won the race but Bolting Cat was a better horse on that day. Their explanations were noted.

Routine urine and blood specimens were taken for analysis from Bolting Cat after the race.
