The start was delayed when Blue Jeans became fractious and sat backwards in its gate with its saddle moving backwards. It was unloaded, re-saddled and then examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and declared fit to race. Afterwards, when horses were re-loaded, Villa Le Blanc broke through and was quickly reined in. Shortly after, Roy’s Express and Alloy became fractious with both horses getting their hind legs caught on the side of the gate. They were taken out, examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and declared fit to race. The Stewards, being of the opinion that the performance of Blue Jeans, Roy’s Express and Alloy were unsatisfactory at the start, advised their respective trainers that they have to pass a barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before being allowed to race again.

From its wide draw Blue Jeans jumped outwards and was then taken across to race behind runners. Roy’s Express jumped outwards, crowding Eternal Love onto Nadas, with Eternal Love racing in restricted room for some distance between Roy’s Express and Nadas. Eternal Love was then eased to secure a position on the rails. Roy’s Express raced wide in the early stages. Alloy raced wide in the early and middle stages. Approaching the 1200 metres Villa Le Blanc had to be eased when awkward close to the heels of Nadas. From approaching the 900 metres Alloy commenced to give ground and despite being urged forward from the 600 metres, kept falling back. It was not persevered with in the home straight and finished tailed off. When questioned, jockey Mansour explained that during the race Alloy was not striding out and approaching the 900 metres commenced to give ground, as such he did not persevere with the latter. Jockey Mansour also said that according to him, the fact that this gelding became fractious and got unsettled in the starting stalls, probably accounted to its bad performance. A subsequent veterinary examination of Alloy revealed no abnormality. Leaving the 300 metres Seven League Boots shifted out abruptly despite jockey Bhundoo’s attempt to straighten it and raced wide rounding the home turn. When questioned, jockey Bhundoo explained that Seven League Boots raced green, pricking its ears from time to time and, passing the 300 metres, changed legs and shifted out abruptly. Approaching the 200 metres Criss Cross Man was taken out from behind Magic Jay to secure clear running. The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Eternal Love was not striding out properly after the race.

Routine urine and blood specimens were taken for analysis from Nadas and Alloy after the race.

Supreme Power jumped awkwardly and shifted in. Dawn Raid was slow out. In Your Dreams fly-jumped and raced wide without cover in the early stages. Canadian Dollar raced wide in the early stages. Headstrong Harry threw its head when being settled in the early stages and approaching the 1300 metres shifted in, crowding Fleetfox over a short distance. Supreme Power came off all the crossings awkwardly. When questioned with regard to the poor performance of Canadian Dollar, jockey Fayd’herbe explained that he was instructed to endeavour to secure a position on the rails as this gelding seems to race better when on the rails, However, after jumping well he eased his mount in order to obtain a position on the rails, got caught wide in the early stages, had to ease his mount again to secure a position closer to the rails and found himself racing further back in the field than expected. He added that from then on his mount raced relaxed and, when asked for an effort leaving the 400 metres, it failed to quicken and was disappointing.

Routine urine and blood specimens were taken for analysis from Five Star Rock and Canadian Dollar after the race.

Accountability, Aficionado and Viento Magico were slow to begin. Saarikh jumped inwards, brushing Esteco. Tembot jumped awkwardly and shifted out, inconveniencing Aficionado. Leaving the 1300 metres Tembot had to be eased when awkward close to the heels of Lividus, which had been restrained. Esteco, which was following Tembot, was also inconvenienced and had to be eased to avoid Tembot’s heels and Saarikh, which was following Esteco, had to be checked when awkward close to the latter’s heels. At an inquiry into this incident, jockey Ghunowa (Lividus) pleaded guilty to a breach of MTC Rule 160 A (b) for excessively reducing the pace of his mount, causing interference to other runners. He was fined Rs.20,000. Leaving the 1100 metres, when the pace slackened, Esteco commenced to over-race and had to be checked when awkward close to the heels of Tembot. Saarikh, which was following, was also inconvenienced and had to be eased. Leaving the 1000 metres Viento Magico was allowed to stride forward to secure the lead. Accountability raced wide from the 600 metres. Leaving the 900 metres Saarikh, which was over-racing, became awkward close to the heels of Esteco and shifted in, brushing the running rails. Bridegroom Bertie commenced to give ground from the 400 metres. Approaching the 300 metres Tembot was held up when unable to improve from behind Bridegroom Bertie, which was giving ground and had to be taken out to continue going forward. At an inquiry into the handling of Cula, trainer Perdrau explained that he instructed jockey Rama not to insist at the star and let Cula race where it felt comfortable, on the rails if possible, or otherwise find cover as Cula usually tends to over-race in its races. Jockey Rama confirmed these instructions and explained that after jumping well, he managed to find a position one off, just behind the leaders, with Cula racing settled. He added that from near the 800 metres Viento Magico improved on his outside, with Cula grabbing the bit and racing a bit keen, however once Viento Magico cleared it, it raced relaxed. He also said that from leaving the 600 metres he had to urge his mount forward and, despite quickening well Cula could not catch Viento Magico and finished second. When questioned, jockey Rama explained that there was an opportunity for him to improve leaving the 850 metres and make Viento Magico work to get to the lead, however he felt it was too early during the race to ask his mount for an effort as it was carrying a heavy weight and that he was apprehensive that Cula would fade in the latter stages. Trainer Perdrau concurred and explained that Cula, being a horse that tends to pull, he was of the opinion that jockey Rama did the right thing not to improve at this stage of the race. He also said that according to him Viento Magico was a better horse on the day. After consideration, the Stewards decided not to proceed further other than to reprimand jockey Rama and to tell him that he should show better judgement when riding in races.

Routine urine and blood specimens were taken for analysis from Viento Magico after the race.
