Please To Progress and Brandewyn contacted on jumping. Ravatak jumped inwards despite jockey Bundhoo trying to straighten it, crowding Brandewyn onto Please To Progress. Absalom was slow out. Mighty Lion raced wide without cover in the early stages. Leaving the 900 metres Brandewyn was taken out and urged forward to improve its position and raced wide from then onwards. Leaving the 450 metres Brandewyn hung out despite jockey Bhundoo’s attempt to straighten it. From leaving the 450 metres Mighty Lion commenced to give ground and shifted in under pressure. Bright And Blue, which was improving on its inside, was carried in onto Please To Progress with Please To Progress having to be eased. At an inquiry into this incident, jockeys Chumun (Mighty Lion) and Goomany (Bright And Blue) were told to exercise care at all times. Passing the 300 metres Please To Progress was inconvenienced when close to the heels of Bright And Blue. Ravatak, which was following, was also inconvenienced and had to be steadied. Lord Wellington hung in in the home straight. When questioned with regard to the poor performance of Mighty Lion, jockey Chumun explained that he was instructed to insist for the lead over the first 100 metres as this gelding races better when in the lead, however after jumping well he asked his mount for an effort but Tornado Man proved faster, as such he was caught wide in the early stages and decided to settle just behind the pace. He added that from leaving the 1000 metres, seeing that the pace had slackened, he let Mighty Lion improve on the outside of the leader so as to race as per his instructions, however Mighty Lion dropped the bit approaching the 800 metres and, despite his urgings, his mount never quickened and faded badly. A subsequent veterinary examination of Mighty Lion revealed no abnormality.

Routine urine and blood specimens were taken for analysis from Avail after the race.
