Acting on veterinary advice that Mc Naught was lame on the near fore leg, the Stewards ordered its withdrawal at 8.30 a.m. today. In view of this withdrawal all bets on Mc Naught were ordered to be refunded and betting with bookmakers was reopened.

Following the running of this race, the Stewards sounded the inquiry sign and viewed the videos of the home straight. It was established that at the 200 metres The Sneaker which was hanging in, shifted ground and brushed Santos, then at the 150 metres The Sneaker was disappointed for a run between Tobeastar and Surprising Dream when Tobeastar lay in. Shortly after this, Surprising Dream rolled out and brushed The Sneaker. The Sneaker then continued to hang in for the remainder of the race. Under these circumstances correct weight was declared on the Judges’ semaphored numbers.

Appeal Board was difficult to load, delaying the start. Shortly after the start Surprising Dream rolled out and brushed Santos. Appeal Board was slow to begin. Bay Musar and Arromonches were slow into stride. At the 1300 metres Appeal Board steadied from the heels of The Sneaker and rolled in, crowding Santos. Donnie Brasco jumped awkwardly. Magic’s Magic jumped awkwardly and ducked out. Supersonic Sam threw its head at the start and shortly after the start was brushed by Seneschal, which had jumped awkwardly. As a result of this, Supersonic Sam brushed the hindquarters of Racketeer Blues which then shifted ground and brushed Right To Tango. Approaching the 1300 metres Magic’s Magic and Seneschal came together when Magic’s Magic lay out and Seneschal shifted in. As a result Racketeer Blues, which was following, steadied. Supersonic Sam raced wide in the early stages. Leaving the 1300 metres Magic’s Magic refused to settle and was then obliged to race wide, as such, its rider elected to go forward down the back straight. Donnie Brasco was taken wide from the 400 metres. At the 150 metres Racketeer Blues steadied when unable to improve between Uly and Supersonic Sam and was then taken to the inside of Uly. The Stewards questioned trainer B. Gujadhur and jockey Sooful in relation to the handling of Liam. Trainer Gujadhur explained before the race the stable had become aware that other runners could go forward in the early stages, as such jockey Sooful was instructed to endeavour to jump well, lead in the early stages, however if challenged, then to take a sit. He added the stable was not confident of the gelding’s chances following its disappointing run at its last start. Jockey Sooful confirmed these instructions and explained his mount jumped well, led early, however shortly after the start it became obvious to him that jockey Currie on Istiqraar was determined to go forward, as such he elected to let that horse go and sit behind him. Then, down the back straight when the pace slowed his mount was inclined to over-race but in the home straight, although holding its ground, failed to challenge. After consideration, jockey Sooful was found guilty of contravening MTC Rule 160 A (i) for failing to ride Liam to the satisfaction of the Racing Stewards, the particulars being that (1) after jumping on level terms he made no real effort to take advantage of an inside barrier draw and a good jump on a horse with natural speed; (2) after looking to the outside he unnecessarily restrained his mount at the 1350 metres when having clear running; (3) from the 1300 metres to the winning post he unnecessarily steadied his mount, allowing Istiqraar to cross easily and take Liam’s position such that leaving the 1300 metres Liam had to be checked to avoid the heels of Istiqraar. He was subsequently suspended from riding in races for two Mauritian race meetings.

Routine urine and blood specimens were taken for analysis from Istiqraar after the race.
