Communiqué des commissaires (en version originale)

Following the running of the race the Stewards sounded the inquiry sign and viewed the video replays of the start. It was established that prior to the start being effected, Saziwayo became fractious in its stall and Annaconda Moon, which was in the adjacent stall, also became fractious and turned its head to the left with the result that when the start was given Annaconda Moon was not in a position to jump with the rest of the field, being slow out and losing considerable ground. As such, acting under MTC Rule 144 (1), the Stewards declared Annaconda Moon a non starter. All bets on Annaconda Moon were ordered to be refunded and winning bets with bookmakers were paid less 5 cents per rupee, the average price of Annaconda Moon being 16/1.

Bataan, In The Frame and Saziwayo jumped awkwardly, being slow out. Kentucky Bluegrass was slow into stride. Passing the 1300 metres In The Frame shifted in and bumped the running rails. From leaving the 1100 metres Kowloon Bay commenced to over-race and was eased when close to the heels of Inside Out, threw its head and raced ungenerously for some distance. In The Frame, which was following, became inconvenienced when close to its heels and was taken out and, in doing so, carried Kentucky Bluegrass wider on the track. Leaving the 900 metres In The Frame was taken out from behind Young Royal. Kentucky Bluegrass, which was following, clipped its heels and stumbled, with jockey Naiko becoming unbalanced. At an inquiry into this incident, apprentice Roy (In The Frame) pleaded guilty to a charge under MTC Rule 160 A (e) for careless riding and was suspended from riding in races for one race meeting. Leaving the 900 metres, when in the lead, Roving Consort shifted out and raced in the one off position. Jockey Bhaugeerothee was shown the video replays of the back straight and told to make sure he stays on the fence so as not to inconvenience horses behind. From approaching the 800 metres In The Frame was allowed to stride forward to race closer to the lead. Approaching the 450 metres In The Frame shifted in, inconveniencing Young Royal. Apprentice Roy (In The Frame) was told to straighten his mounts earlier than he did on this occasion. Approaching the 450 metres Kowloon Bay became awkward when close to the heels of Young Royal and was taken out to avoid its heels and raced wide from then onwards. Leaving the 100 metres Captain Matthew shifted in slightly under pressure, inconveniencing Inside Out on its inside. Young Royal and Kowloon Bay hung in over the last 100 metres. Over the concluding stages Bataan was taken out from behind Inside Out to secure clear running. An inquiry was held into the handling of Captain Matthew. Trainer Ramapatee Gujadhur explained that this gelding had pleased in the lead up to the race but as it was drawn wide and running in a strong field, he only gave it a place chance. He added that he instructed apprentice Deenath to jump, endeavour to follow close to the lead, preferably on the rails and ride it out the last 300 metres. Apprentice Deenath confirmed these instructions and explained that from its wide draw he had to use his mount over the first 200 metres to be able to secure a position close to the lead on the rails. He then elected to settle his mount going uphill and in the back straight the leader slowed down the pace, with his mount commencing to over-race. Following this, he waited until the 300 metres to make his move, with his mount failing to run on as he expected it to in the home straight. When questioned, apprentice Deenath explained that, in his opinion, he had to save his mount leaving the 1100 metres as much as he did due to the fact that he had asked it for much of an effort from the start and that he waited up to the 300 metres to ride it out as instructed. Mr. Gujadhur conceded that apprentice Deenath might have over-restrained his mount leaving the 1100 metres for some distance and that he should have let it improve behind the leader leaving the 500 metres, however he added that in his opinion there was nothing sinister in apprentice Deenath’s ride and that he rode this gelding in this manner simply due to inexperience as it was only the 5th occasion he was riding in a race. After consideration, the Stewards decided not to proceed further other than to tell apprentice Deenath to show better judgement when riding in races. The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that In The Frame returned with a major laceration to its off side flank.

Routine urine and blood specimens were taken for analysis from Roving Consort after the race.

The start was delayed when Van Der Scaler proved difficult to load. Van Der Scaler jumped awkwardly and shifted out, inconveniencing Smitten and Dreams Come True. Van Der Scaler shifted back in despite jockey Aucharuz trying to straighten it and, in doing so, inconvenienced Earthwind’nfire with the latter shifting in, crowding Captain’s Cronicle onto In To Beep with Captain’s Cronicle having to be checked and losing its position. Communiqué des commissaires (en version originale)

Acting on veterinary advice that Count Emmanuale was lame on its off fore leg, the Stewards ordered its withdrawal at 8 a.m. on Friday. In view of this withdrawal all bets on Count Emmanuale were ordered to be refunded and betting with bookmakers was re-opened.

Following the running of the race, the Stewards sounded the inquiry sign and considered an objection lodged by jockey Goomany, the rider of Monsieurnando, being declared 2nd, against The Real Hero being declared the winner, alleging interference in the home straight. Evidence was taken from both riders and trainers. It was established that leaving the 200 metres The Real Hero shifted out under pressure with jockey David shifting his whip to his left hand and approaching the 100 metres The Real Hero shifted in under pressure with jockey David having to straighten his mount and shift his whip to his right hand. At the same time Monsieurnando shifted in, with jockey Goomany having to straighten his mount to continue going forward. The Stewards, being of the opinion that at the time The Real Hero shifted in, it was more than two lengths clear of Monsieurnando, that the shift had no bearing on Monsieurnando, that jockey Goomany did not stop riding his mount, thus decided to dismiss the objection. Jockey Goomany (Monsieurnando) was fined Rs.10,000 under MTC Rule 176 for lodging a frivolous objection.

Direct Approach jumped awkwardly and was slow into stride. Apple Pie stumbled on jumping, Torotino was slow to begin and, from its wide draw, was taken across to race behind runners. Apple Pie and Even Chance raced wide without cover in the early stages. Leaving the 1200 metres Apple Pie was eased to take the position one off the rails behind Direct Approach. Near the 750 metres Torotino had to be steadied when Apple Pie shifted in slightly. Jockey Rama (Apple Pie) was shown the video of the incident and told to make sure he leaves enough room to horses on his inside. Torotino was taken out to improve its position approaching the 400 metres. Approaching the 300 metres Apple Pie was taken out to improve its position and in doing so carried Torotino wider on the track. Leaving the 200 metres Man Of His Word shifted out under pressure, resulting in Monsieurnando, which was improving on its outside and shifting in under pressure, having to be taken out to continue going forward. Approaching the 150 metres Navistar shifted out under pressure, resulting in Apple Pie, which was improving on its outside, becoming awkward when close to its heels and having to be eased and taken in to continue going forward. At an inquiry into this incident, jockey Ghunowa (Navistar) pleaded guilty to a charge under MTC Rule 160 A (e) for careless riding and was suspended from riding in races for one Mauritian race meeting.

Routine urine and blood specimens were taken for analysis from The Real Hero after the race.

On its way to the starting stalls, Scorecard dislodged its rider; it was quickly brought back. Scorecard was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to run. Nothing Compares was slow to begin. Bobby Bear was taken back from the start. Scorecard jumped awkwardly, shifted in and shortly after bumped Bobby Bear. Gida and Scorecard raced wide without cover in the early stages. From leaving the 1300 metres Chinese Gold commenced to over-race and, when being settled, threw its head sideways, racing ungenerously for some distance. When questioned regarding the poor performance of Scorecard, jockey Naiko explained that he was instructed to jump and find a position close to the pace. However, after jumping moderately, he found himself racing wide in the early stages and further back than expected. He added that from leaving the 800 metres this gelding changed legs on some occasions and that, when asked for an effort from approaching the 400 metres, it failed to quicken as expected, lay in in the home straight and was disappointing. A subsequent veterinary examination of Scorecard revealed no abnormality.

Routine urine and blood specimens were taken for analysis from Hillbrow after the race.

Seven Fountains was slow out. Gharbee jumped awkwardly. Arabian Empire jumped awkwardly and shifted out, contacting Levanto. Arabian Empire then shifted back in, crowding Gharbee onto Seven Fountains with Seven Fountains contacting the hindquarters of Torero Dancer, turning it sideways. From leaving the 1400 metres, Seven Fountains commenced to over-race when being settled to avoid the heels of Torero Dancer, threw its head and raced ungenerously for some distance. Leaving the 1365 metres Arabian Empire became awkward when close to the heels of Levanto and threw its head when being settled. Leaving the 900 metres Gharbee was taken out and allowed to stride forward to race closer to the lead. The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Gharbee was lame on the near fore leg. An inquiry was held into the handling of Seven Fountains. Mr. Subiraj Gujadhur explained that this gelding which was having its third run in Mauritius, had pleased in the lead up to the race. He added that it was racing over 1600 metres for the first time in Mauritius and was fitted with blinkers. He instructed jockey Naiko to endeavour to jump well and race close to the lead and, according to the pace of the race, to decide when to make his move. Jockey Naiko explained that having suffered interference at the start, he did not manage to ride as per instructions and found himself back in the field. He added that leaving the 300 metres, when asked for an effort, Seven Fountains failed to quicken, finishing a disappointing fourth. When questioned, jockey Naiko explained that he could have improved his position leaving the 600 metres on the inside of Arabian Empire but he thought it was still early to make his move, as such decided to wait a bit longer before asking his mount for an effort. Mr. Gujadhur explained that, in his opinion, jockey Naiko ought to have improved on the inside of Arabian Empire and follow Torero Dancer. After consideration, jockey Naiko was found guilty of a charge under Rule 160 A (i) for failing to ride Seven Fountains to the satisfaction of the Stewards in that passing the 600 metres when his mount was running last in the field, travelling well in hand and there was an opportunity for him to improve his position on the rails behind Torero Dancer, which was moving forward, and make ground on the leaders, he failed to do so, resulting in Arabian Empire, which was racing on his outside, slotting in in front of him at the 450 metres to secure the position behind Torero Dancer with Seven Fountains finding itself further back in the field, thus being counter-productive to its chances in the race. He was suspended from riding in races for one Mauritian race meeting and fined Rs.25,000.

Routine urine and blood specimens were taken for analysis from Gharbee after the race.
