The G1 Sydney Cup (3200m) has been abandoned mid-race following an incident that saw both Who Shot Thebarman and Almoonqith lose their riders.

Blake Shinn was unseated from Who Shot Thebarman when Almoonqith broke down early in the two-mile contest.

Both Shinn and Almoonqith's jockey James Doyle were able to walk back to scale, with Doyle displaying a slight limp.

Unfortunately Almoonqith could not be moved from the track following his injury, forcing stewards to call off the race before horses straightened for home.

The jockeys at the front of affairs were unaware that the race had been abandoned, riding their mounts right out to the line while Almoonqith was being attended to on the track.

Polarisation ($20) was first past the post, with 'winning' jockey Corey Brown reportedly furious when told of the stewards' decision.

Who Shot Thebarman galloped on after the incident but it is understood that Almoonqith could not be saved.

The ATC are looking at options in respect to the Sydney Cup being re-run at a later date.
