Queensland stewards have suspended a jockey for six weeks for whacking a horse over the head in a race at Mackay last month.

Apprentice Zoe White received the penalty after pleading guilty to an improper riding charge at a hearing at Townsville on Saturday.

Stewards ruled White looked to her inside before changing her whip action to deliberately hit The Arod across the head when trying her mount Winsomemore home in the Mojo Benchmark 60 Handicap (2000m) on May 26.

Racenet reported the matter last month. The Mackay stewards did not list the incident in their report of the meeting but the act was picked up in an review of the race replays in the days following the meeting.

White was suspended from midnight on Saturday until midnight on July 21.

Stewards ordered White to undergo three sessions with a professional sports psychologist before she can return to race riding.
