Legal Eagle (Greys Inn) was named Horse Of The Year for a second year running at Tuesday night’s Equus Awards.

Not only was the Avontuur bred gelding named Horse Of The Year for 2016-2017, but Legal Eagle, whose wins last season included both the Gr1 L’”Ormarins Queen’s Plate and Gr1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes, was also named Champion Older Male and Champion Miler.

Legal Eagle has now a total of six Equus Awards to his name.

The Equus Awards, which was held at the Emperors Palace Casino, proved a memorable night for trainer Sean Tarry.

Not only was the latter named Champion Trainer, but his charges, Legal Eagle and Carry On Alice picked up a combined total of five Equus Awards, with Carry On Alice named Champion Older Filly/Mare and Champion Sprinter.

Former champion trainer Mike de Kock, who saddled his 3000th winner in 2016-2017, was honoured with a special award for his numerous training achievements, which include winning major races throughout the world. De Kock’s charge, unbeaten Gr1 SA Nursery winner, Mustaaqeem (Redoute’s Choice) was honoured by the Equus title of Champion Two Year Old Colt.
